The perfect Christmas... almost

Christmas Day is always a big deal in our family. It's the one time of year when we all come together, squeeze around the table, and enjoy a proper feast. This year was no different. We were at my grandparents' house, and the kitchen was filled with the mouthwatering smell of roast potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, crispy pigs in blankets, and, of course, the star of the show – a perfectly cooked turkey.

The table was set, the crackers were ready to be pulled, and everyone was gathered, stomachs rumbling in anticipation. It was the picture-perfect Christmas scene. But what we didn't realise was that someone else had been waiting just as eagerly for the big moment – Toby, my grandparents' mischievous border collie.

The great turkey heist

Now, Toby is usually a very well-behaved dog. He's playful, loves a cuddle, and is always up for a game of fetch. But on this particular day, the temptation was just too much. As we all turned our backs for a moment, ready to take our seats, Toby saw his chance.

In a flash, he leapt up, grabbed the turkey with his teeth, and bolted out of the dining room. For a few seconds, nobody quite realised what had happened. Then, chaos erupted.

The smell of the turkey was not only enticing for the family – it was too much for the usually well-behaved dog too.

We all jumped up, shouting Toby's name, but he was already halfway through the house, turkey clamped firmly in his jaws. The sight of him dashing through the hallway, leaving a trail of roast potatoes and stuffing in his wake, was both shocking and, let's be honest, absolutely hilarious.

A Christmas chase

What followed was a scene straight out of a comedy film. My uncle tried to block Toby's path, but the dog was too quick, dodging around him like a seasoned rugby player. My dad attempted to lure him with a biscuit, but Toby wasn't falling for that trick – he had the ultimate prize in his mouth.

Eventually, after a few laps around the house, my cousin managed to corner him in the living room. With some gentle coaxing (and the promise of some turkey later), Toby finally let go of his prize. The turkey, however, had seen better days. It was slightly chewed, a little soggy in places, and missing a fair chunk from one side.

The family all saw the funny side, but thankfully, after a short race around the house, they managed to rescue the turkey – although partly chewed!

Making the best of it

After a quick inspection, we decided that most of the turkey was still salvageable. A bit of carving, some strategic trimming, and a lot of laughter later, we finally sat down to eat. And yes, Toby got his fair share too – just in a slightly more controlled manner.

In the end, it was one of the most memorable Christmas dinners we've ever had. Sure, it wasn't quite as planned, but it gave us a story we'll be telling for years to come. And as for Toby? Well, he spent the rest of the afternoon curled up by the fire, looking very pleased with himself.

Everyone, including Toby, got to enjoy the Christmas dinner after all.

A lesson learned?

You'd think we'd have learned our lesson about leaving food unattended around Toby. But knowing our family, I wouldn't be surprised if next Christmas brings another unexpected adventure. One thing's for sure – we'll be keeping a much closer eye on the turkey next time!
